“I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.” (Revelation 1:9-11 KJV)
Patmos was a place of banishment where the wicked and violent were sent to die. Grey haired John was placed on the sterile isle as a religious prisoner for boldly declaring the message of Christ to an amoral society. John was “shut away from the busy scenes of life and from the active labors of former years.” Interestingly, it was on the parched and barren land that John was filled with the Spirit of God and was given insight on the future and instructions for the Church.
John received life changing revelations in a place that was meant to kill him.
You may be trapped on your isle of Patmos – isolated from what is familiar, banished from the things and people you love, persecuted and punished for your commitment to Christ. Maybe you are feeling stuck and lost on the lonely isle and no one understands you or maybe you are screaming for help to be rescued from your place of loneliness and bareness/emptiness and no one is responding to your S.O.S signals.
Hang tight. There are certain manifestations that are only made on our isles of Patmos. Just as God revealed the scenes depicted in the book of Revelation to John, God will reveal deep and hidden things to you on your isle of Patmos. He will share insights on your current worry and hurt and use this place of emptiness and isolation to bring to you the revelation of our blessed friend Jesus! He will use this dry land to reveal to you life saving pearls of wisdom that will be of benefit to you in your next season.
Take out your pen or keep your tablet close and take note – God will speak in the silence and give you a word of clarity and comfort. Keep your heart and soul open – God will reveal another side of His character.
Remember, this is not a place of punishment but one of protection; it’s a place of inspiration and revelation and not one of isolation; it’s a place of blessing and not one of banishment. This is your place of clarity.
